Day for Night - (Waiting For A) Westbound Train

from Seven Chords and Some Truth by Day for Night, The Mirrors, The Boarders

/

about

In a September 2019 rehearsal, Day for Night performs a real anomaly in my recent songwriting output. It was speedy in every way: The idea, inspired by a conductor's announcement on an Amtrak train, came to me in a flash. I wrote the song in a couple of days, as opposed to the usual two or three years. And Gretchen and I learned it within weeks, as opposed to the usual . . . you get the idea. It was actually an eastbound train we were waiting for, somewhere in Massachusetts, as we began a trip to Colorado. But between the alliteration, which is nothing to be sneezed at in country songwriting, and the potent symbolism of East vs. West in the American story, I had to bend the facts to suit the reality. Written in Boulder, Colo., in June 2019.
