Je t’aime

from The Boarders: Bloomington Blues by The Boarders

/

about

An interpretation, somewhat unfair, of an affair I had with a Swedish girl in 1976. For the song, nationalities were changed because, well, Paris, you know. Although, or because, I distorted the facts to save face, I still regard it as one of my best songs. Written in 1982 and originally performed with the Fashion Jungle, this song came into its own with the Boarders.

lyrics

Je t’aime
(Copyright © 1983 by Douglas L. Hubley)

You wear your heart on your sleeve, but how easily your blouse comes off
I wish I couldn’t believe, but once I thought I’d never see enough
Now I wish you’d dress and go
But je t’aime, je t’aime, I suppose

Lovers love being in love — once we felt we had to break this golden rule
But only when push comes to shove do the exceptions always prove the fools
Now I wish you’d stay or go
But je t’aime, je t’aime, I suppose

Aznavour from the window sang for someone else
The sun on the river shone for someone else
I came to your city for something else
The words on your lips were for everyone
I wish you’d kept them to yourself

As we sat watching the jets, you said you hate to make a long goodbye
Well, we should have made it right when we met, but still you’re kind enough to cry
It’s romantic but I’ve got to go
But je t’aime, je t’aime, I suppose
Oh, je t’aime, je t’aime, I suppose
