about

With musical Christmas froth coming at us from all directions, this selection takes five minutes to look, instead, at a melancholy side of the holidays.

We understand that loss is integral to life, and so peace must just be made with that fact, art made from it, character built, etc. We grow up hearing this, and maybe even had to come to grips with it early on.

In whatever form it takes, the departure of a loved one hurts in many ways — the unanswered "Why?" can be the worst — and that’s the topic of “Blue Shadows,” written this year and recorded in November.

Blue Shadows

She left behind the carols sung in the dark
The Christmas lights the city strung in the park
She went away and who can say
Why people go when they go?
Into shadows — blue shadows
Well, sometimes people simply pack up and go
Into shadows — blue shadows

Is there a person who’s been scarce for a while?
You miss his piercing eyes, his daredevil smile
Gone like the tide, but people hide
What they don’t want you to know
In the shadows, blue shadows
He’s found a place to be where you just can’t go
In the shadows, blue shadows

What throws blue shadows on a bright winter day?
What brings back memories that are best packed away
Beyond recall, well, after all
It happened so long ago
Simply shadows, blue shadows
Well, memories sometimes just blow in with the snow
Casting shadows, blue shadows
